The Cost of Freedom: A D-Day Remembrance

Landing on the beaches of Normandy, June 6, 1944

“…The Tide has turned. The free men of the world are marching together to victory. I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty, and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory. Good luck, and let us all beseech the blessings of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.”
-General Dwight D. Eisenhower, D-Day order speech.

On the morning of June 6, 1944 more than 160, 000 Allied troops began their attack on Nazi strongholds along the beaches of Normandy, France in World War II.

5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the massive initiative where 9000 Allied troops were either killed or wounded. The cost was great, but it stopped the advance of Nazi Germany and allowed 100,000 troops to begin their advance through Europe, liberating those nations oppressed by the Nazis and eventually defeating Hitler.

Fellow soldiers built this memorial on a secured beach on D-Day

More than 65 years later,
D-Day still represents the greatest example of humanity’s stand against evil. Hitler sought to conquer the earth and annihilate the chosen people of God. He tried to bring about a world government of oppression and false worship; he tried to place himself upon a throne of greatness painted with the blood of God’s saints. But hundreds of thousands of Allied troops called out in one voice, “This evil will not stand,” and as many as 6000 soldiers died at Normandy to push the Nazis back.

Troops help wounded soldiers to safety on D-Day

We have a responsibility to remember the price that was paid to liberate our world. To many of us, D-Day is a thing of history, but all across this nation there are men quietly sitting this morning, remembering the horrific gates of Hell they walked through to protect future generations. These are the men to whom we owe our freedom. As we pray for our troops and remember the fallen, let us also give thanks to the God who delivered us from evil. He has purchased the deed to this earth with the blood of His son, and though Satan will try to destroy God’s people and bring the world into submission again, his power is counterfeit and fleeting. Until that day when he is chained, may God forever remind our hearts of freedom’s cost.

America’s Weekly Prayer List (Memorial Day)

In addition to posts on Spiritual Formation, History and Prayer, American Psalms offers this weekly update with relevant Prayer Points, a featured American leader to pray for, and tips on growing in your Christian walk as you pray for America. Please join us in praying for the nation.

Praying Patriot Tip:
This week we remember the fallen soldiers who have given their lives to protect our freedom. It’s a thought that becomes lost in the hurry-up culture we’ve created with that freedom, but we can do better than that. As we spend this week in prayer for our military leaders, troops, and the families of those who’ve lost loved ones, let’s do more than simply speak the words—let’s allow ourselves to share their suffering. Let’s spend time in the Word and recognize that neither freedom nor liberty come without a price being paid. Christ paid for our eternal freedom, and our soldier and their families have paid the price for our liberties. May the Holy Spirit impress this truth upon me daily. May we, as a people, never forget the sacrifices made by our God and our soldiers so we might be given the grace of freedom.

Prayer Points for the Week of May 27-June 2, 2012:
Our Prayer Points list is slightly different this week. Rather than being focused on current events, they focus on the men and women who protect us. Please join us in praying for our military:

  • Memorial Day is the perfect time for you to commit to praying for the nation on a regular basis. If you’re not sure how to get started, visit The First Prayer page on this blog.
  • Remember to pray for the Commander in Chief. The lives of many troops are in his hand on a daily basis, which means we should pray for him daily. A sample prayer for the President is available here.
  • Throughout this week, pray for our soldiers and their families. If you need inspiration, there is a Prayer for our Troops available here.
  • On this Memorial Day week, remember to pray for the families of those who have  given their lives for our freedom. Join us in a Prayer to Honor Fallen Heroes.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal how you can serve the families of those who are deployed or have given their lives. There are military families throughout our communities that deserve our support.
  • Ask God to open your eyes to the opportunities of honoring our veterans. May His mercy and compassion be reflected in our actions.
  • Remember to pray for our Military leaders. A partial list of men and women to pray for can be found in our Featured Authority section below.

Featured Authority:

“I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone–for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:1-4, NIV)

While we normally feature a single authority to pray for each week, but today American Psalms offers a list of our top military leaders. It is not a comprehensive list, but I encourage you to pray for those who hold the lives of our soldiers in their command:

Commander-in-Chief: President Barack Obama
Secretary of Defense: Leon Panetta
Deputy Secretary of Defense: Ashton Carter
Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman: General Martin E. Dempsey
Army Chief of Staff: General Raymond T. Odierno
Marine Corps Commandant: General James F. Amos
Chief of Naval Operations:  Admiral Jonathan W. Greenert
Air Force Chief of Staff: General Norton A. Schwartz
Coast Guard Commandant: Admiral Robert J. Papp, Jr.
Commander of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan: General John R. Allen

Biographies for these and other Military Leaders can be found on the Department of Defense website. Remember to pray for our Military Leaders on a regular basis.

American Psalms Update

As we move into this Memorial Day weekend, we will be sharing three special posts. Saturday we’ll ask you to join us in prayer with an original American Psalm for our troops. On Sunday, a moving Memorial Day prayer will be posted in honor of our fallen heroes. This will be followed by a special edition of America’s Weekly Prayer List on Monday.

The prayers posted this weekend are from our upcoming book, American Psalms: Prayers for the Christian Patriot, which received a powerful endorsement today from best selling author and nationally known speaker, William J. Federer:

William J. Federer, best selling author

“Joshua J. Masters’ book, American Psalms, is tremendous! It is an uplifting, faith-filled treasury of inspiring prayers, solidly based in Scripture – “an answer to prayer” for our country at this critical time. With practical prayers for every area of life, including officeholders, farmers, business leaders, families, teachers, military, healthcare providers, Israel, Hollywood, and holidays, American Pslams: Prayers for the Christian Patriot is an easy to use and highly effective guide in spiritual intercession.

Joshua J. Masters calls us back to our nation’s foundation of faith, just as Connecticut Governor Jonathan Trumbull did in his Proclamation of Fasting & Prayer, April 19, 1775, the day New England farmers “fired the shot heard round the world” at Concord’s old north bridge, that: “God would graciously pour out His Holy Spirit on us to bring us to a thorough repentance and effectual reformation that our iniquities may not be our ruin; that He would restore, preserve and secure [our] liberties…and make the land a mountain of Holiness, and habitation of righteousness forever.”

I highly encourage every American to have Joshua J. Masters’ book, American Pslams: Prayers for the Christian Patriot.”

- William J. Federer, best-selling author & nationally known speaker

We are honored and humbled to have Mr. Federer’s endorsement. Please be sure to “Like” us on Facebook for updates on the book’s June release, interviews, book signings and future events.
